Great story. I have a good friend whose father was a WWII vet and member of a local VFW. His father used to tell the other members that his son loved helmets, so the vets used to give them to him. Some unique helmets turned up!

That being said, alot of superb helmets turned up (and still do) from the woods of Pa. Smack in the center of the "militaria belt" in the US.

Nice story about beating the bushes. I was at a Christmas party a month ago and my wife mentioned I collect German helmets. A man there said he has a SS helmet he got in Germany in the 60's. I kept my cool and asked if he'd sell it and he said, "I never thought about it, guess I would." Later that night I showed him some pics of my helmets on my phone. He picked out a Luftwaffe helmet and said that's the kind he has. I guess he thought a Swastika means SS. I've run into that before
