    Hi Andy,

it is indeed actually light blue, not sanded down black and I can asure you that it wasn't done post-war.
And no, the price wasn't at a premium.
For what it's worth, it was never presented as a volunteer helmet, just as a helmet that had a scraped of decal on the national colors side with blue specks of paint remaining.

      My sentiments exactly.

alright...thats just what it looks like to me from the posted pics..as I said, to each his own. Something like this could be whatever you want to imagine it to be I guess...

          Hi all,
thanks for all the very much apperciated comments...

Ben is 100% correct - what he stated are the facts ! The helmet was sold to me as was it is: an M35 SD Heer nothing more and nothing less and I`m happy with it even if it is was former an volunteer helmet or not (but I believe so, as I have the helmet here in my hands and inspected the tricolor very carefuly with an mag. glass) That this helmet has an very good chance to be an volunteer helmet was MY imagination, not the sellers ones ! ! THANKS again to the kind, friendly and honest seller ! !

As I already mentioned the blank steel parts were the tricolor was scraped away have the same nice old and brownish patina which can also be found on all other "blank" steel parts of this helmet (such as the brim, airvents,...), so it was definatly done periodly. The remnant tricolor colors are definatly Blue-White-Red, so as Rolf stated this seems to be more French than Dutch. The outlining of the shield was scrachted into the fieldgrey color, to make it much easier for the guy to paint the shield and give him an shape and good look.. (see the close up of the tricolor!)

Regarding to this facts I stay with my opinion that it seems that this helmet was in duty with an foreign volunteer... There is no evidence for this theory, as the shield was scraped away (excluding the little remnants). But the avaible facts and the looking of the job indicates that this theory is more correct than wrong.

But as Andy already mentioned very correct: To each his own !

          Cheers Stephan

This helmet was captured in Holland, it was simply a DD M35 Luft having the nat'l colours decal painted over in blue, white and orange-red (original decal can be seen underneath the overpaint).

Are you sure the vet did not do that? Patriotic, perhaps? I seriously doubt that is the way it was captured.
