I would want to examine this helmet in person to be 100%, for me its not a one looker, either way.

I am not sure but I guess it’s a mix of oxidation and dirt. I haven’t seen the helmet in hand myself yet.

Here is a last photo shot which shows the decal. Not much detail left in it but it is there.

              Cheers

This is a tuff one - one thing that concerns me is that the twists on the wire are not consitent - some go one way and then some go the other way - maybe this can happen? - just wanted to point this out

Personally, I think it would have to have a hands on inspection to make sure. That red rust doesn't appeal to me. It appears (and this is my observation only) to reflect modern aging techniques. On an old helmet that has rust, it tends to be dark and hardened. This just doesn't have that look to me. Ron

Those new pics leave no doubts in my mind. Galvanized wire with old rust in spots where the coating has eroded. No "new" rust anywhere from what I see. I think you have a winner.

I like the look of this one. Would like to handle it as well.

Many galvanized chicken wire helmets have varying degrees of the white residue present. Even super clean ones.

Looks very promising, don't see any immediate red flags.

As mentioned above, galvanized wire also rusts when exposed to the elements. The zinc in it bleeds this white rusty material, which is common. After the zinc layer is gone, the steel under it will rust the usual red. This factor can help you with galvanized wire validation when you understand the aging of wire and element exposure throughout.

                            Cheers,

                            Asper

This one has a very good chance of being an original period wire pot IMO. The wire looks as it hasn't been manipulated for a very long time while their are signs on the helmet surface of the reaction with the elements in the wire's galvanised coating. Regards, Bill
