    1st pattern rule

I was browsing www.germanhelmetsinc.com and he states "Every original helmet that I have ever seen that displays the "1st pattern Rune decal has been a helmet that is maker marked "Q"." Does anyone have in their collections a 1st pattern Rune decal that contradicts this rule? Are there any rules?

    Chuck,

Yes, there are rules but...that isn't one of them. Every factory-issue Q helmet should indeed have the 'Q' 1st pattern variant runes decal on it but there are indeed real helmets other than Q products which display first pattern runes decals.

The 1st pattern decals were in fact, the very first style of decal manufactured...even before the Quist company began producing helmets.

Maybe he (Ken) just wanted to say that he had never seen a 1st pattern "Q" decal on another helmet then a Q-helmet. Otherwise it would not make sense

I maybe missing a major point here. Did Quist have a 1st pattern rune decal for their helmets that differed from other 1st pattern runes?

          Chuck,

You are not missing anything...that is exactly correct. Unfortunately because of the lurking fakers here at the site I will not get into specifics on those differences.

All of the books I have read do not mention this particular fact, not even Kelly Hicks. Thanks for all your help!

              Chuck,

In fact, Kelly's new Volume 3 to his "SS Helmets- A Collector's Guide" series of reference books will deal with this aspect of collecting these rare helmets. I was speaking with him a few days ago and it should be out in a matter of a few weeks...he hopes.
