    Damaged helmet

Hi everyone, i would like to share with you what i got last weekend during a little military show here in Italy... it's an M40 WH (Q64/475) with liner on but without the leather and just small pieces of the chinstrap. The guy was hitten on front (i guess artillery fire or something) and the damage produced a deep crack on the shell. There's still a pretty decent decal turned yellow and the helmet body was painted in yallow camo paint all over. I know it's quite difficult to see cause everything is pretty much well cooked... and now the cool part of it... the legend says that the helmet was taken from a graveyard right after the end of the war and kept like that since then...
IMO this would explain a lot of the inside (i guess the guy didn't survived) and the outside condition...
ah just one small addition, the decal seems to be quite indifferent to the lamp... too much sun?

I like the helmet. I love battle damaged helmets. Im sure that someone is going to have a problem that it came from a grave yard though.

                thanks for sharing!

The helmet looks nice and all original, including the "yellow paint".
The damage was caused by something "heavy" going at a "slow" speed: probably a shell fragment or stone falling down after an explosion.

What caused the damage to the helmet probably would not kill or seriously harm the wearer; but he may well have been hit by several other more deadly fragments at the same time.

Thanks Jean Loup, that's really a very good explanation of the possible cause of the ultimate hit. Man i can almost imagine that...
