    German firemans helmet

    Hello,

Could you tell me if you think this looks alright, I thought it looked ok but you never know. The decals seem to have gone, one looks like it was a big swastika, what would that have been then please. Knowing nothing about these I've heard all sorts of stories of SS barrack firemen etc. Who did wear a big Swas on the helmet or has this been faked.

Sorry to post such a crappy thing, it's not my sort of thing but it was my first German helmet of sorts. And these questions must seem simple to you guys, please forgive my ignorance on it.

    Kind regards,

    Marcus

I think it is a nice helmet Marcus. Someone else can help with you with the specfics on the civil helmets. It is possible that it was repainted black and someone put the swastica on it postwar, and later it was removed.
Looks like a good helmet, Nice liner and condition,

          The price was right

Early Fire brigade decal, on the other side would be a tilted National decal, these were used before the regular Polizei decal...

And don't worry about three things, Marcus :
                - There's a lot of different black paints on Feueurschutzpolizei / Feuerwehr helmets : matt, satin, and even shiny, applied conscientiously or not, over another layer of paint or not... And I won't talk about the liners...
                - Knowledge and ignorance are at the origin of this forum.
                - It's far to be a "crappy thing" ; and even if it was the case, the most important is for the item to have more or less a relationship with helmets...

I posted two pictures, showing this helmet-type with these decals, from an album I recently acquired at the GDC forum.

I cannot post pictures here so if somebody could post them here I think it would be worthwhile for this topic.

Marcus;Your helmet brought back nostalgic memories of childhood for me.
This type of helmet was the very first German helmet I had(circa 1955)and it made a good crashhelmet for reckless bicycle riding.
Even though your swastika decal is worn and apparently the canted national shield is'nt evident-you are lucky to have the crown-comb on the helmet.
Most were removed. It's tough to find a helmet with the comb still on it.

                            Hi Marcus!

I try to look past the bad in a piece and concentrate on the good, and I
see a lot of good in this helmet. It appears all original but has been simply
                            de-nazified which is quite common.
My best advice is to hang on to it. But if you choose to sell it, wait until
you can replace it with a better piece first. Then you will have two nice
helmets in your collection, and you will not have to apologize to anyone, for
                            any reason, ever again.
