Well, I've learnt something today as well! I know that the stictching can be black (though none that I have are) but didn't know the stitching could be found off to the side at 90 deg. like that one.

Also, I though the impressed border also had to come to a point where the end of the strap comes to a point but it seems not in every case.

Brian, you're right about being jumpy with chin-straps... they are not covered well in the reference books so when I see something that is not the 'norm' for me I do get uneasy!

Glad to see it's a good, early piece. If there are no objections I'll be saving that one for future reference.

The thread is tied off well within the edges of the strap unlike Chris,s which appears to lap around the strap.

Hope this explains the 'issues' that I referred to Andy.

Billy, I could have signed your post : my concerns were exactly the same as yours. Moreover, I'm always more fussy (if ever it was possible), when I see a black chinstrap on a LW helmet...
See that, I already had one (neither mint, nor minty) with a black chistrap too ! (below) And on this one, the chinstrap is positively "soldered" to the helmet...
Who said that brown chistraps are often encountered on LW helmets ?!
The only two brown chinstraps I own are (since day one on helmets, of course ) :
        1°) On a M.35 DD Polizei helmet.
2°) On a camo M.35 DD Heer helmet.

Anyway, this thread is turning in a very interesting way ; because, as I said before, too few info is given about the different chinstrap models & variants in the vast majority of the reference books. So, I think go on sharing yours may be a pretty good idea...

Here's one in very, very light brown, painted buckle. This helmet was purchased from a veterans estate..

Black chinstrap thread is quite common, the more helmets you handle, the more you'll notice it...

Perry, isnt your brown chinstrap simply a normal balck one set up upside down??? Normally the inside is brown, and on your brown one its black.

No, there's no rule to it. You'll find them turned both ways. Sometimes even mis-matched...but that one is the lightest colored one I've owned..
