Well to finish off this little story, I kept the helmet, it was only 400 euros and it looks great in my display cabinet, so im happy.
And about the interesting fact brought up about spray helmets during the war. I collect German war photos also, and in one of my photos, a German RAD man is standing beside the back of a lorry, circa 1941, with a small handheld spray gun, hes spraying small damage to the trucks paint work. And I was thinking, if German soldiers or repair crew still had access to this type of simple equipment later in the war, it is would be very easy to spray paint up a helmet in any colours they wanted, and the spray would have been compromised of relatively fine particles ?
