What to do with parts / liner etc.

I posted a liner not long ago which most believed was good (although the pictures were bad). I thought I'd post the 35 pattern helmet it was out of and ask your opinions what to do wtih the parts.

Here's the story. This helmet was purchased by someone I know about 12 years ago. it was a DD winter cammo but the finish had been sanded to make it glossy and smooth. Supposedly the veteran saw the other helmets at the show were smooth and decided to sand his. Anyway I ended up with it as a large package deal and I took it to a couple of shows where noone took any interest. I didn't know about this forum yet. I sent a photo to Marcus Bell and he said the decals were 70s fakes and that the exterior cammo was not good. I decided to take the bogus exterior paint off and see if original paint was underneath. Anyway the paint looks like an undercoat or something The exterior and interior both flat grey. Look at the picture and see. This surely isn't original paint underneath is it? It looks too thin. The shell is a large FS 66 -- batch D236 I believe. By chance recently I picked up an original size 66 42 pattern shell on the salty side but for sure with original paint.

What to do with all this? Should I stick the liner in the 42 pattern shell? Have someone repaint the 35 pattern as a rebuild? Or just sell off the parts?

Sell everything to me cheap But seriously you do have a nice lot of parts there. The liner you have would be correct for the M42 helmet, if you wanted to make a parts helmet. I would probably sell off all the parts you have and buy a nice salty helmet off the e-stand (with better paint than the M42). You can probably sell all the parts, for what you can get a decent no decal helmet for (or real close). If you wanted to, you could even kick in some extra cash and get a decaled helmet. If you assembled a helmet yourself, it will always be a "parts" helmet, a nice or salty original is always a better investment.

Or take a chance with ebay, the way some throw money around you can get a real nice helmet. Just a thought

                        Guys... Please.

Jokes on the old owner it might have sold for as much as $3000 as an original cammo, oh well. His property, his call.

Keep in mind though that what happens to a helmet after the war is part of the helmet's history too. I have a chrome plated M-40 that could be restored to look original but I won't because the helmet's biker regailia experiance is part of the story.

That's true but when a helmet has been altered to deceieve, that puts a cloud on it don't you think. I have an old Spanish helmet (not worth much anyway I know) that has hippie paint, peace signs, etc. from the late 60s on the exterior. I think that is kind of cool and part of the history of artifact helmets in America as is the biker helmet you mention. However a helmet that has been altered to deceive the collectors market is not part of the normal evolution of the veteran bringback helmet -- it is a criminal bastardization -- destruction of an artifact of history. So I really didn't feel bad about taking it apart and stripping the paint to glean usable parts. As for selling for $3,000 I don't think so. No one would even look at it at $400 when painted to deceive. I would imagine the forum members would have torn it apart if I had posted it here and even E-bay buyers would have stopped wayyyyyy short of $3000. That's when I thought it was good. I would'nt have tried to sell it at all if I had thought it was bad.

                              To Deceive

As a collector yeah I can imagine you guys go ape over these modified helmets but for me the fact that I can get cheap reproduction helmets to fill the gaps in my collection is great. I want wall hangers not museum peices. I read this forum and drool over some of your helmets but If I want a camo FJ, I buy a repro or restored shell and a can of rustoleum then take the $4000 that I did not spend on eBay to the bank. Just to make you guys happy I write the word "FAKE" under the dome just so there is no question later.

As far as the fakes go, I was talking to a fake dealer in CZ and could not talk him down one cent on a obvious fake. You remember those tan "AK" helmets from the 1960s? One of those. Those guys are BOLD and BRAZEN! He knew it was post war and still wanted 400 Euros, the same helmet in Germany sell for 15 Euros and yes I bought a bunch.
