    Chinstrap Advice Required

    I have been offered a helmet, the chinstrap fitted looks to be original and is marked;

    gxy
    42

The buckle is aluminium and the wear to the strap is good, the outer surface is black and the inner blown. All good so far. However, the outer surface of the strap has two indented lines, one at each of the outer edges of the strap, running its full length.

My question is; what is the opinion of helmet collectors as to the originality of such examples? I know some people don't like them or consider them to be a variant of fake, but I'd like to understand where this info came from. Is there a trusted reference source which states that this is a repo strap?

Please someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks for the link, there’s some good information there, but nothing about the parallel lines which are present on some chinstraps.

The strap in question has none of the qualities indicating a repo as mentioned on the site. I'd still like to know what the general consensus of collectors is and upon what their views are based on.

      Cheers

Hers is a pic of the liner and the strap.

I'm happy with the liner, and the appearance of the strap is good. Any further help would be appreciated.

I have a piece of ground found chinstrap that has these lines, from a m35 helmet.

So far everything looks ok on the strap, can you get a close-up of the buckle?

Did these types of straps appear on combat helmets? I have heard some comments that this chinstrap with the line was civilian issue only?

I will post a close up scan of the buckle soon. Does anyone else have an example of this type on a combat helmet they are happy with they can post?

                      Combat chinstraps.

                      Hello Graeme,
this is one of my combat helmets, this has (i think) the type of chinstrap you are referring to. Personally i have no problem at all with this type of strap. These shots were taken quickly, but i can do more if you wish.

Here's a shot of the strap showing the lines you are talking about.

                            Graeme,

Chin strap is fine. Have attached a snap of one on a M35 DD Luftwaffe (late pattern).
