I know some people don't like these staps but from the photos and posts above I'm happy that they are indeed period combat helmet straps.

Patrick, that is the type of strap I'm talking about, cheers.

Here is a scan of the buckle on my strap. It looks to have been painted originally, most of the finish has now worn away.
