    Terry,

I share your concerns over the shocking prices these go for and the availability of fakes which proliferate the market. Assuming there are individual collectors out there who have accumulated large numbers of them, I doubt such a shrewd investor would ever flood the market with selling them all, therefore decreasing the value of his own stock.

Reproductions on SS pieces of all varieties is now an occupational hazard for any interested collector. It makes it all the more hazardous in acquiring a piece outside the realms of recognised dealers. Auction bargains are almost a thing of the past as far as SS militaria is concerned.

However I agree with Perry, whilst forgeries continue to dominate our market the illusive original which is recognised as such will continue to increase in value.

Ty, Mikes comments are spot on, the fittings are what is the important point on these items. This is where the battle is won or lost! Always vital to get good detailed snaps from a seller on any prospective purchase, especially of the fittings!!! Comparison against this piece and then presenting it as a new thread is surely the best way of eliminating most of the risk.

Will try and get some more snaps Rich.

Ty, this is one of my collecting goals. I eventually want a WSS M40 SD w/ it's original cover..never messed with. I think these would have been a pretty popular souvenier, so I'm sure they are still out there. I keep my fingers crossed every time I walk into an antique store, flea market or estate sale. You never know Bill Shea had a no decal M42 w/ it's original cover for sale about a year ago for $4K. It lasted about 10 minutes on his web page. In one of the helmet books there is a picture of a covered M40 w/ sniper veil, along w/ the period pic of the same helmet sitting on someone's dining room table after having been mailed home to the wife. That is a KILLER rig. Another gorgeous one is on Mark Bando's 101st ABN website. An M42 SD w/ it's original cover. I'm drooling. gotta stop

                Guys,

To put everyone in the picture re. the Waffen SS camo cover that I posted, serious concerns have been raised about it concerning authenticity.

I will disect and record the technical detail as I amass it in total and inform the forum when I complete this task.

In the interim if offered a similar looking item I would respectfully suggest refraining from any purchase.

                C'est la vie!

                Regards,

                Billy

                  Guys,

The cover I posted has been identified as post war construction by Mr Bill Shea. The rockers and clips are wrong and the rivet is too small and in the wrong position.

Hope this is of use to all concerned now are in the future.
