Terry,
I share your concerns over the shocking prices these go for and the availability of fakes which proliferate the market. Assuming there are individual collectors out there who have accumulated large numbers of them, I doubt such a shrewd investor would ever flood the market with selling them all, therefore decreasing the value of his own stock.
Reproductions on SS pieces of all varieties is now an occupational hazard for any interested collector. It makes it all the more hazardous in acquiring a piece outside the realms of recognised dealers. Auction bargains are almost a thing of the past as far as SS militaria is concerned.
However I agree with Perry, whilst forgeries continue to dominate our market the illusive original which is recognised as such will continue to increase in value.
Ty, Mikes comments are spot on, the fittings are what is the important point on these items. This is where the battle is won or lost! Always vital to get good detailed snaps from a seller on any prospective purchase, especially of the fittings!!! Comparison against this piece and then presenting it as a new thread is surely the best way of eliminating most of the risk.
Will try and get some more snaps Rich.
