    SS Camo Helmet Covers

Can anyone help me on Original SS helmet covers?

What is textbook for these covers, such as color of stitching, camo pattern.

Does anyone know of a good reference book with original examples?

Does anyone else have a 100% originial that is a no doubter that we can use as an example?
    Vet finds, anyone?

    Ty,

Le Casque Allemand & Ludwig Baer, Der Deutsche Stahlhelm(German version) have a few photographs regarding Waffen SS camo covers.

This one is good, not direct vet pick up but third party removed.

                Rich,

One worry, I am not certain the eyeliner used goes with the brown eyes.

Wow, that is nice. Assuming someone would be lucky enough to locate an original of these, how much can he expect to pay for it? Do they come up for sale at all or are they pretty rare? I would love to have one of these.

Best to speak to the wifey on such matters... we can make decisions on picking the nicest helmet or the coolest medal but when it comes to what eyeliner goes best with what eye colour well, we just don't have the genes for such things...how did we get onto the subject of make-up?

ps is it reversable? If so, could you show a pic with the other side out?

                        Hi All,
Perry, don't take this personal, because I don't/wouldn't mean it that way.
I'm sorry but $2K for a helmet cover is rediculous! They are around for cheaper than that, but as far as I am concerned they can stick them where the sun don't shine!!! And I love SS stuff, but COME ON. I'll go with out for sure, because that is pure stupidity. When the big boys, hoarders, what ever, die , move on, what ever, and start dumping the 20-30 that they have, the prices will come down, can't wait for the fakers to catch up like the badges are getting, so many good fakes most cannot tell, and they are going to kill the market. I know many people who will not collect them now because of that reason, and it will be the same with those helmet covers. I still say this field is riding on a big bubble that one day will burst and all the stuff will be almost worthless.

Unfortunately, I agree with Perry, I have never seen a 100% original less than $2000. Sure, you see plenty on ebay for $300 or so, but what are you getting? My first thought was that price was insane, but I never thought I would pay $5000 for a DD SS either. I hope this isn't just a bubble! I'm betting it isn't.

I find these covers very risky. The colors on this one are more vivid than I would expect to see. I just really don't know how to judge these. This one looks very nice, thanks for posting Billy.

                            Hello,

In my opinion, 2K is a conservative price for a good second pattern cover. An earlier model in a desireable pattern (a mix of patterns, plane tree, palm) would be worth an easy 1K more.

Covers are problematic but not impossible to judge. Assume that the pattern and material will be perfect and period in any case - the best fakes are made from old cut up zeltbahns. For that reason, close study of the rocker clips, springs, etc is essential. It is very, very rare for fakers to have access to this hardwear. Further study of stitch patterns, threads, spring pockets, wear patterns, etc is also critical. Get hold of a real piece and study it to death, taking images of every aspect for your personal library. Look for differences in material; the Germans never threw away anything and even if the cover is completely one camo pattern, you will often see material from different dye lots.

Just some thoughts - I have some concerns but I would not give up completely on collecting camo!

                            Mike

SS/FJ items will allways be at the forefront of Third Reich collecting, this I feel will never change. In the future I think you will see a even more price gap between SS and regular Wehrmacht items..
2,000 is on the low end, I've heard of them going for much more and the factory made reversable Wehrmacht covers are fetching near $2K now..
Terry I respect your feelings on not buying one for $2K plus, but there are plenty of SS collectors that would give that and then some for a original...
Very few people own a original....
