I have never found any phtographical evidence that supports the use of the palm tree on a helmet, seen a lot of fakes, none that ever convinced me!!

A friend and WAF member has a fantastic DAK helmet with a palm tree painted inside the flange of the helmet. It is absolutely genuine, but again, the palm tree is inside the helmet along with a special unit marking. This is the only example I have seen which was authentic.

        Hmmmm.

That would be very rare in a M35 or M40, but an M42 in Afrika would be a rare sight anyway I feel.

M42's in North Africa are somewhat scarce but there's ample period photographic evidence of them.

here is a thread about the subject I started a long time ago about the same subject:

            http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=157031

The helmet with the palm tree in the inner skrit is pictured I think in page 2

And for the record, this is NOT the helmet I am referring to. Their difference is night and day. The helmet I refer to is marked to a radio traffic "listening" unit. Am hoping the owner puts the helmet in a book he is working on.

                John,

anyway you can get us a pic of it? The cool thing about this one with the artillery piece painted on is that I have a bunch of pics to a DAK artillery unit that came from a guys photo album. Matt

I knew Floyd very well and have bought and sold to him plus he put some orig. decals on helmets for me back in the 60's.I never sold one of those helmets as nothing but what it was an orig. helmet with orig. decals post war applied. I would forget about this helmet being orig..Floyd has passed so I am not going any further with this post.

                    Thanks for the link.

What about the DRK helmet in Kurtz's AFRIKAKORPS book? There is also a poor looking FJ lid and another lid in the Scipion and Bastien Afrikakorps book.

                        tan camos

It seems quite reasonable that DAK soldiers painted the DAK logo on their helmets. They certainly marked other equipment with it, and there was no doubt considerable pride associated with that logo. So why not?

However, calling a tan helmet a DAK is a stretch, I believe. Tan helmets can be found from just about every theater of operation. I had one I found in the woodwork in Norway, which I have since sold. I have seen them with vet provenance from the Continent as well. Ordinance tan was commonly used on vehicles outside of Africa and the Mediterranean. Tan (some lighter, some darker) base was often used on so-called Normandy tricolor camos. I am no paint expert, so Gulli can tell us more about this. Nor am I a DAK expert or any other kind of expert, so this is just my two cents.

                          Hi,
This is the best I can do, photographs of the images in the two books. First is the DRK from the Kurtz book.

                          Thanks,

Thirdly, the M40 from the Scipion and Bastien book. Only one pic of this one.

Based on the pictures provided, I wouldn't own any of those helmets.
