Why would a vet add a chinstrap? Was he planing on wearing it?

Before reading anything I did a double take. Looks right as rain. First of a kind.

          Why wouldn't he?
It completes the helmet without harming it or doing damage. It's just a chinstrap. Not that he repainted it or so....

It just that all the WWII US vets I have known [I knew many] really never even thought of repairing or "fixing up" something they brought home as a souvenir. In my experience it was always somebody else, like a collector...

Gents - can I go backwards and ask a 101 question on this helmet, just to confirm my studying? Question is: Do the M40 EF helmets normally carry the porcher decal, and hence why EF decals are normally seen on M42 helmets? I appreciate the patience with my question, I am ramping up on decals and I like threads like these. Dan

The gray area exists as to exactly when EF designed its own inimitable style decal and when it made its debut in their line. The helmet we’re reviewing here indicates solidly that (1) and possibly some (?) of the M40 line apparently got them. Previously the mindset had been that only the M42 line got them. Pochers had been the decal usually seen on 35’s and 40’s. If anyone differs with this chronology I hope they say so.

                                Robt.
