Just a British quote on the Battle of Cheren, fought by the Savoy Grenadiers: " Cheren was one of the toughest infantry battles ever fought in this war, and this was due to the obstinacy shown by the Savoy battalions, the Alpini, the Bersaglieri and the Grenadiers, in a composed and decisive way, something never shown by the Germans in any recent battle. In the first five days of battle, the Italians counted 5000 lost soldiers (1135 of these, mortally). Lorenzini, this brave young general, was practically beheaded by a series of shots fired at him by British artillery. He was a great commander of Italian troops in Eritrea. The unhappy war propaganda of the time allowed the British press to represent Italians as soldiers of fortune; but if we exclude the German paratroopers division operating in Italy and the Japanese active in Burma, no enemy army with which the British and Indian troops have had to clash, has been able to engage in a more acrid and effective battle than that of the Savoy battalions in Cheren. In addition, the Italian colonial troops, until the moment of capitulating on the last positions, fought with valour and courage and their loyalty on the field was a witness of the excellent Italian administration and of the valid military preparation made in Eritrea."
