My local Military fair came up trumps this morning as i picked up a nice 1871 Italian cavalry sword !...its a Union Militare Roma sword with nice etched decoration with Royal coat of arms etc on the blade !..so pleased to find one ..right on my doorstep !.. happy days ....

In my opinion what you have is a more common mod. 1888 officer sword in use by all arms of the italian army except Bersaglieri, Carabinieri and cavalry.
This kind of sword is still in use, but now with republican attributes.

Sometimes you can identify the corps of the former owner by the specific engraving on the blade. In other cases offficers used to personalize their swords with initials or full names. This tradition is still going on.
During my military service when I was commisioned I ordered my sword with both initial on the pomel and full name on the blade

Mmh, I'm afraid Passo Stanco has right, at least partially! The handle is smooth, while the infantry type is fingers'-shaped. I didn't note this detail!
But I'm still thinking it's not cavalry... Cavalry swords should be curved!
So this can be an artillery sword, mod.1888, like this one:
