I know this is a Necro post, but where did you find that pic with the soldier standing in the tankette? Btw, this was in Tikrit, at what was then FOB Speicher. And it wasn't in running order that I recall.

Not sure how long ago it was found, but the US Army got hold of this Italian ww2 era "Tankette" CV33.

Note that its marked "NMCS" = ''Non-Mission-Capable Status-
      equipment status; equipment is working"
meaning that it apparently is running !!

Another pic from the same series. You see why I am curious as to where that other picture came from? I found the link to here on another site, and am following the trail back, lol

          Great stuff Hoovie Dude!
Maybe now some exciting vehicles will surface from the Libyan desert, like abandoned LRDG or DAK equipment,
but I guess the deployment of coalitian ground forces would be key to be able to recover such abandoned desert artifacts,
          as was done in Afghanistan.

Btw I read in a 4X4 magazine yesterday that a group of Jeep fans wanted to ship some ww2 vintage Willys Jeeps to Egypt
and cross into Libya, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the LRDG missions... but with the civil war situation
the expedition got postponed to 2012 now...More here:

the Ansaldo in 1937 sold sixteen CV 35 (Carro Veloce = fast tank ) to Iraq, and some other (13 tanks) to Afganistan....

and I only have this photo of these Afghans: year 2000, Italian "alpini" on the remains of two of this tanks

Why not given it back to italy instead?
Or why not leaving it in Irak? After all it benongs to the iraki people, don't forget that.
In any case, I agree that if they are planing to restore the CV as they did with the french tank, better if they leave it in place!!!

                  Tankette

I doubt Iraq people give a crap about an Italian tankette.

Just save it and restore it.

Its stupid just to waste away in the desert.

This Tankette was used to build a monument inside an italian army base near Rome were I spent 3 months during my military service.
It's exposed to the elements as well, unfortunately...
