Well, okay, maybe it's a stretch and it isn't nearly as cool as Michel's KM issued denim bordjacke, BUT fellow association member Gordon Williamson assures us in 'Grey Wolf' that the uboot crewman did use MANY of these captured battledresses after the fall of France in 1940 (and they are a lot more affordable than the real KM-variant ).

Good question Billy,

Often the British battle dress are used by the U-Boot collectors to make a Bordjacke, it is possible only with the early model (before 1940) because the KM has captured many British materiel to Dunkerque (1940), so if you have a battle dress with a posterior date it is impossible.
The german fabrication is practically the same that the British made, german material of course, with many fabrications and variations.

I think you will find Lee is "pulling our legs" (having a joke) with us about his denim BD blouse The photo is not very clear but it would appear to be an "Austerity pattern" blouse; these were not worn until 1942.

I often see fake "U Boat denims" here in the UK. The have been faked here since the 1960's. Denim BD's have always been cheap to buy (but this is now changing and like all WW2 items the price is rising). Many have original KM buttons and eagles added. But most fall down because the fakers use the wrong pattern of BD blouse. All the buttons are exposed and the pockets do not have pleats. In addition to the cut of the blouse, is the difference in colour. This pattern of blouse is a grey - green shade and was not introduced until 1942. The early pattern of denims which were used by the KM and which were from stocks captured at Dunkirk were in a khaki brown shade of cloth. The pockets had pleats and the buttons were hidden under a fly front.

Well, this particular battledress was manufatured in later 1941 -- but I think it was captured during a commando raid on St Nazaire, stripped off of a captured commando, the offending flashes and patches were removed, and then it was handed over to a Uboat commander. Who exactly, I can't recall, it was either Suhren or Topp, I think.

Or maybe it just sat in a wearhouse in Belfast ...
