As far as i know, the leather trims on the shoulder were useful to protect the shoulders from the weight of the rifle when it was bringed in rest position. The leather loop under the left arm instead, was suitable to bring a Stielhandgranade or a smoky granade, all features suitable to the guard soldier and, obviously, not necessary to the drivers troops...
