Okay, it is hard to see the number in the images. "8" fits perfectly with Infanterie-Divisions-Nachrichten-Abteilung 8 assigned to the the 8th ID which was later the 8th Jager Division.

The rank also for me is fine, he may have been on the unit staff etc. They promoted people to this rank to increase their pay also. I have seen this for drivers etc.
