Trying to get more information on soldiers Totenkopf cap

Had this posted elsewhere with some feedback but I am trying to find out if this man was Heer and he added the Totenkopf for photos or if the totenkopf was part of his uniform. Thank you.

My guess is that he removed the 2 front hat buttons and used the TK to secure the front, and he also added a metal visor hat eagle.

Thank you Glenn. Would he be allowed to wear this in the ranks? I've never seen this before.

Used as a tradition badge on side cap for example , but between the eagle
        and cockade normally ?
This M43 has been pimped in that way but not enough space between the eagle and the cockade , so why not under the cockade !

            Traditiom Totenkopf

You have a nice couple of Fotos! He is wearing a GAB badge and possibly either part of a Kav. unit or Aufklaerungs. He also looks to be wearing a unit slip-tab on his shoulder strap. I think the tradition in this case involves Reiter Rgt. 5

            http://www.kaisersbunker.com/ht/tradition.htm

Prewar the Reiter/Kav units were used to form the cadre of Aufklaerungs Abteilungen.

A new Kav. Rgt. 5 "Feldmarschall von Mackensen" was later formed and used the tradition Totenkopf.
