Kevin , that is one ugly eagle!!! I couldn't tell you where it was made.

I am still asking about the characteristics. I really don't know what they are. The term "Typical French" is used as 11C put it to pigeon whole ugly eagles that they can't classify as anything else.

Norm gives us a good lead in the direction with his 2 bullion badges! If these are French made, which is a very good possibility, then French made eagles might have been made of the same type of materials with the same skill in manufacture shown here. I am not talking about all eagles , just some. When somebody says "Typical French" then they are talking about a majority of the French manufactured eagles. I want to know what the characteristics of the majority of these eagles are! I actually don't think there are any. I believe 11C to be right and it is now a catch phrase in the collecting community.

Sorry I'm so late in revisiting this thread. One thing I might add that I learned about 30 years ago, so it's probably been re-searched better by now................French-Made refers ONLY to Kriegsmarine eagles. Brest, France was a Kriegsmarine port and required a couple of local taylors to support the fleet. They produced only Kriegsmarine eagles. So any other eagle, not Kriegsmarine, is not French made.
You uniform guys, feel free to jump in here and correct that statement if you need to.

Again, I ask, what are the characteristics of a French made eagle? I am not trying to be obtuse or anything. This term is just thrown around in the collecting circles and as seen here in these two threads it is used to describe two eagles that have absolutely nothing in common.

Patrick W. gave me a nice description of the characteristics of Heer and SS eagles. Why are the French Made" Km eagles so different?

Sorry Fred, I'm not the Kriegsmarine eagle expert, but I can tell you, from what I've been told..... that no French-Made Kriegsmarine eagle is bullion. The term applies only to fabric eagles of the Kriegsmarine and Coastal Artillery.
What makes them French-Made other then them having poor construction, weak backing (that easily fades to a lighter blue) stitched to a white fabric, less defined feet and irregular stitching to the wreath.................From a dealer's perspective, ANY "ugly" KM enlisted eagle fits into that designation.

This sums it up pretty good. But it is disheartening to see collectors spout it off at any ugly eagle! We should know better and want to find out where the eagle really came from! Thanks again.
