The officers on the group photo are all wearing the admin style of collar tabs, as my example.

                  An exceptional setup.

I have a question relating to the GFP. If they were "secret", why did they have a distinctive uniform?? Doesn't that make them obvious??

That is a common question I have seen for several times on the Forum.

                    - The GFP wore their uniform when working on their bureau, interrogating people, making reports, doing arrests,...
No problem to be seen in their uniform. Knowing they excisted could be enough for some people not to go into resistance... Fear is a weapon.

                    - They were wearing civilian clothes when they had to infiltrate resistance groups, doing research on the streets,... Then they used the GFP disc to ID themselves. In some special cases they could wear any German uniform they wanted.

They also worked with V-leute: people of the occupied country that worked for the GFP as infiltraters, informers and snitches. By the common people they were all called 'Gestapo'.

When a country was lead by a Wehrmacht Verwaltung most of the research and infiltration on resistance groups was done by the Abwehr. When having enough evidence the files went to the GFP who handled the arrests and interrogations. As the war went on the GFP became the executive of the Abwehr.

In a country with a civil Verwaltung the SD was in charge (Gesapo was a part of this). But they also gained power in the other countries as there was to much work to be done only by the Abwehr and GFP. Gestapo personell also had a service uniform => SD uniform. And they also worked in civilian clothes.

A wonderful uniform and one that has been eluding me for 50 years.

                      Congratulations!!!!!

A beautiful and textbook piece!! Were there NCO versions of this specialty? This is only the second complete uniform I have ever seen, and the first named. I would love to find a LW version. I have been lucky enough to find insignia, but not a complete specimen. Congrats on this top self item.

Here some period photos of GFP NCO's and EM. Top photo was taken in Northern France 1944, bottom photo in Holland 1944 (also note the Stengun).

Some of the NCO's appear to have 'GFP' cyphers on their shoulderboards, would be interesting to know if they all have the same Waffenfarbe as well.

Thanks for the replys and the photo's!

There were indeed NCO's. An Oberfeldwebel was named a Feldpolizeiassistent.

I'll post a picture of a GFP gruppe in Brussels. It is visible that they are not all using the same Waffenfarbe. Typists, translators and other duties could be done by personnel from other branches, attached to the GFP.
