M44 boards for review (PzGren & Artillery)

Hi, I recently aquired these M44 boards. The Panzergrenadier boards are what I would hope (!) are 'typical', slightly mismatched with one tongue of Italian cloth, the other Feldgrau 44?

The Artillery pair seem to be constructed as I expect (I don't mind the mismatches) but the piping is different - hopefully the pictures will show this. I believe it is rayon but less 'slippy' in a more corded style. Is this a known variant piping for M44 straps, is the piping OK generally?

Both looks like Nice originals.. the basket weave piping is sometimes seen on m44 boards, no problem..

Last one of the artillery underside. I have been a shoulder board enthusiast over the years (Waffen SS and mainly in the pre-WAF days - so much better now with all the shared knowledge), but recently I've looked at Heer and Luftwaffe boards too. These M44 boards have great character - I do like the variations you see - it tells a story as to what was happening to the German war machine towards the end of WW2.

I like especially the arty boards, the simplified key hole on one board ( without perpendicular stitching) is interesting and could be considered like a red flag on earlier made boards.
I own a last ditch M44 jacket dated 45 with similar buttons holes.

I agree entirely with your observations about the button hole.

So when exactly did that type of simplified "over-locked" button hole come into being ?

Is it something developed by the Germans in 1944 as part of simplified M44 production techniques ?

I have seen an earlier version of this simplified production, where they run around the button hole with the button hole support stitch but do not do put a separate 90 degree "bar tack" in place to hold it together at the end

However, the button hole on this M44 artillery board overlaps where the bar tack should be like it was made on a post war over-looker ???

Could this in fact be an 1944 produced tropical board ? After all production of the caps and tunic stopped some time in 1944. Is this simply a simplified M44 button hole with no 90 degree bar tack in place ?

Nice late war boards indeed. In the first images I thought the artillery set might have been Nebeltruppe. It is on the edge in the images but would be a little darker red.

Not a real rayon basket weave piping used for these WSS boards...
but some kind of cotton post war piping !
Basket weave piping was of course used pre 45 .
