I am glad you dug this thread back up Mark! Was a very interesting subject matter with fine examples of "Never say Never" tunics! I look forward to seeing if anyone else (Matt) has anything to add to this fine thread? Excellent photo to bring it back to life with Mark!

        Hi Mark

Nice photo, any ideas where/when it was taken ? Faded tan tunic could be Greece '42 or Tunisia '43 ? Glad to see this thread again...

          Hi Tim,
          Unknown date or area.
The application of collar tabs on tropical tunics was a fashion fad, and from what I understand at this point, introduced in late 1942 into Tunisia by the 10th PzDiv, while also seen on Sardinia at about the same time. Interesting that it was not stamped out as being agains't uniform regulations - obviously to engender a sense of pride and elitism(?)
Note that the skulls appear pinned directly through the tab and collar - and not at all centrally, either...
Here's a photo of the reverse of my photo. If anyone can help with a translation I would be grateful?
          Best Regards,
          Mark

I thought this picture might fit with this thread, -thanks for bumping it as I had not seen it before- though I don't know where or when this was taken. It was Ebay a few months back, but I missed getting it.

Looks like a stug wrap, some tropical coats and luft trop uniforms, so probably nothing to do with 10th panzer, but still interesting I hope. The guy in the wrap looks familiar?

There is a picture of Hans Von Luck wearing TK's on his lapels, from Panzer Commander.

While not dealing with 10. PD here is another shot of the Tropical tunic worn with TK tabs.

No connection to the seller BTW.

                Best regards,

And another I bought from Ebay today, this is the sellers pic, with highlight and blowup by me. I await its arrival.

                  No idea on the unit.

TK's were exceptionally common on lapels in the Pz units. This differentiated them from the Panzerjaeger, but also it was unit tradition anyway...
                    Collar tabs...now that's a different story...

but.................. a photo of a Panzerwaffe NCO in Afrika wearing a Spainish Cross is very, very rare. In fact this could be the first that I have ever seen.

What a shot and it looks to be a bright one so it might be a silver or gold class.

                      Thanks for posting Mark,

                          Hi Mark,

And one with a trade badge, Schirrmeister I think. A great pic.

                            Yes for sure !

The number and range of tropical sidecaps from faded to new looking is worth commenting about as well.

I have not seen too many photos with that number tropical sidecaps in use. The official title was "Mutze, oliv, f. Pz. Schz."

Look at that photo and you can see why,

                              Hello,

Yes, I think it's a 15th Pzr. Div. photo. This soldier was probably part of Group Imker (Drohne) ~ a volunteer from Pzr. Rgt. 6 (3rd Pzr. Rgt.) under v. Thoma. Here's the site and text:

                              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Ritter_von_Thoma

From 23 September 1936 to 8 June 1939, von Thoma was sent by the Army High Command to Spain as Commander of Group "Imker" (Beekeeper), the ground contingent of the German Condor Legion. Arriving in Spain in early October 1936, the personnel of Group "Imker" were originally volunteers from Panzer Regiment 6 "Neuruppin" of the 3rd Panzer Division. Tasked with training Franco's Spanish Nationalist officers and men in tanks, infantry tactics, and artillery and signals employment, Group "Imker" maintained two, then three panzer training companies equipped with Panzer I light tanks (panzer units were codenamed Group "Drohne" [drones]).

                              Great stuff!
