Panzerpioniere, great photos. Thanks for sharing them. The "Der Spieß" tunic in the photo would be a center piece of any collection. I wonder were it is today.

Rob, have you received the repro badge yet? Looking forward to seeing good photos of it.
It's now en-route back to me, I let one of my friends borrow it to study / photograph. When it gets back I'll post some good pics of it.

Ok, I got my really good repro Steuermann badge back from my friend.

I dare say it would fool most collectors (even with item in hand) unless they were versed in Steuermann badge variants.

I'll post a detailed description later tonight with good pics.

Edit: Here's a teaser, can you spot the fake?

Well, I'd be fooled because they all look good to me. If I had to pick one out of those I'd say top row #2. Watch, you'll tell me that's a text book example .

                              Good choice!

                              You are kooooooorrrect.

With the exception of the above, the rest of the repros I've seen (3 variants thus far) are ridiculously easy to spot.

                                Here it is:

It will pass the burn-test, but it will also fail the black-light test, modern white thread is used to secure the silver bullion in several places, most prominent near the bottom of the anchor. Also the circumference of the cloth is slightly smaller then the rest of my period examples. In addition all period Steuermann badges either have a small "hook" or "ring" if you will coming off the bottom of the anchor, this repro has a long bullion line that comes up the right side.

You can also notice that the bottom of the anchor is pointer then period examples.

The back is the real give-away, no legit Steuermann badge has a backing like this completely covering the bullion.

The backing is very securely in place. (glue of some sort?) I'm going to soak it in water and attempt to loosen it up some to get a good look at the bullion work.

The only backing that would look slightly similar is the early 1st pattern metal Steuermann badges, with the metal backing plate (like arm shields) and a cloth cover over the backing plate if it's in complete shape.

Like I said above, all the other fakes I've come across are pretty laughable and easily spotted compared to an original.
