If he was a Bataillon Kommandeur pre-war he might have held too high a rank to go as an Abteiung Kommandeur after mobilisation. So he either took a Regiment of his own or was at least posted to the staff or a Regiment and/or Division!?!?

    Kavallerie-Regiment 17

Formed 1.1.1921 as 17 Bayerisch Reiter-Regiment; 6.10.1936 renamed Kavallerie-Regiment 17, peacetime garrison Bamberg, Wehrkreis XIII.
    Disbanded with mobilisation and formed:

Aufklärungs- Abteilung 10 Wehrkreis XIII with a Reiter-Schwadron
    Aufklärungs-Abteilung 7 Wehrkreis VII
    Aufklärungs-Abteilung 27 Wehrkreis VII
    Aufklärungs-Abteilung 54 Wehrkreis VII

I do have a list of officers with Kavallerie Regiment 17 from June 1939, however currently I am not at home to peruse it!

Interestingly from a Flea Market years ago I did pick up a Truppenausweis to a vet with Kav.Rgt. 17, of course no idea where he went after the unit was disbanded, however with my interest in 1 Kav.Bde./Div., it turned out he was transferred there in 1939 as the vet on the Brigade Staff!!!!!

Thanks Ian for your considerable research. I'm very curious what may have happened to this officer - the tunic was obviously worn hard, seems to have been made in 1939, and the boards have never had the inside seams opened to be swapped out nor the cyphers changed. The cap saw tons of service as well, but the unit history would certainly not give him much a chance to wear it!

Naxos and John, your speculation helps us with some possibilities as well. I appreciate your knowledge of the cav outfits!

The ribbon is the black and white WWI type, with so subsequent award holes on it.

    Regards, Robert

      Robert,

the only officer in the rank of Major serving in KR17 in it's last year of existence (as John pointed it out already) was Major Körner.

Looks like we have one other officer with the regiment in 1939 - this guy. However he managed it, he was on duty wearing this uniform, according to the boards and tag. Attached maybe? Wrong rank? Short of discovering his Wehrpass in the lining of the hat, it doesn't look like this answer will come easily.

The gentleman I traded the hat from said the hat was named. Since the sweatband is so fragile, I don't want to turn it up again, but have asked him where he saw the name.

He probably was attached to the unit right before Poland, the entire Wehrmacht was understaffed and brought back many older reserve officers beyond the (E) officers on assignement as "advisors" who had WWI experience etc. He could have been Landwehr etc. and when he was activated had a tunic made for the assigned unit with active duty officer boards (no gray underlay). Many officers were brought back and only served until postions could be filled by younger officers and then were returned to Landwehr status and not placed on active duty status again. They do not exist on unit rosters and it is very hard to track them. I suspect this is what we are dealing with. A lot like the Waffenrock I just restored, Steppan was brought into service and then replaced the month before Poland was invaded with a younger officer. There are no records of him, only his name in the 6th Panzer History and the 1938 Ranglisten.

I believe the name in the tunic is Major Kutzky

Reinhold Kutzky (the later Generalmajor and DKG winner)

In 1939 Kutzky was still a Kavallerie Officer attached to the OKH as an advisor.

He was promoted to Oberstlt. sometime in the spring 1939 back-dated to January 1, 1939.

He was an officer in Kavallerie Regiment 9 - I got no idea were the 17 on his boards come in.

I know we have spent some time over this one but he appears to have gone over to signals from 1933. Then Reichswehrministerium (RWM) which became the Reichskriegsministerium (RKM), then OKH....I presume as a signals specialist?

Perhaps NARA will hold the clue!

Ian, I asked Mike to pull the records. We will see. The tunic is from the US Vet that brought it back and the boards match the tunic with no evidence of replacement plus the Bamberg tags etc. The only thing that does not match well is it only have loops for one breast award. If that is the symbol for an EKI

If he was with the 17th I think he may have been sent to supervise retraining or something like that based on his record he was specialized in several different things. I suspect he may have been ABWEHR or involved with Army Intell early on based on his laufbahn. We will see what the records say. Certainly the name and rank match.

                    Great work naxos!

The WWI wound badge was often omitted and only the EKI was worn

Here is the visor after 4 months of reshaping, steaming and TLC. It had been crushed along the center and the head band was broken. The sweatband had fallen half from dry rot. I repaired that. The lining is badly mothed and brittle but is still a beautiful hat.
