That is one killer set of cut off tabs and collar tips...WOW! Boy did that souvenir hunter blow it. Congrats!

Great HG tabs. Very interesting to me is the "back of collar" shot which shows very tight zig-zag pattern and and the remnants of the "thousand stitch" collar attachment stitching which many claim is bad. Of course, they could be good tabs on a cut-up bad wrapper, but I very much doubt it.

I did pick it up at a Civil War show, so who knows the history. I always thought it was good and kept it in my collection, but if it's bad, it's gonna go, or at least be "marked" as such.
Yes, I am certain that eagle is a $10 fake and that is not a peice of smock material. Sorry. Throughout this thread there are smock eagles on pieces of smock; there is also a very lengthy thread in the FJ section on smock eagles.

Your HG tabs are certainly a great find!

Could we see a rear view? Sorry, but so far I am doubtful this is an original piece.

I have a friend that I was in the US Army with, he now lives in Lithuania, he knows I collect and looks out for stuff. He said there are bins of fake insignia sewn on any type of wool that can be found and being sold as real at flea markets etc. More than 75% of the "cut-off" insignia I have seen in the last 5 years is embellished and sewn to post War fabric or out right junk made to look tunic removed. It amazes me what length people will go to in order to make money.

Almost all of the SS cut insignia I see at shows are bogus. I have generally found the Luft pieces to be relatively safe, though I have not encountered the ones from the east. I did learn yesterday about one dealer from Europe who comes over to the Max and SOS who fakes the stuff himself; and rather convincingly at that.

                              Jon Fish's Eagle-

An issue tunic normally only has a single layer of lining fabric behind the main source of the wool, the one you posted looks like it has modern synthetic "bunting" and three layers of lining material.

Sadly what happens, and what my friend has seen is that overcoats etc. are chopped up and common insignia sewn to them to enhance values. There was a "fad" of collecting "cut off" insignia and it was easily addressed by purveyors of new "originals".

Hi Willi you posted when I was writing, I agree 100%, the LW one just posted IMO is on modern wool, that forest green and the seam do not add up. Looks like the back seam of a coat etc.
