Hi Team,
Just a quicky. Does anyone know what this hand-stitched lettering in a coat I've found mean? (Is the photo upside down?)

What is the coat?

Hard to tell, I have seen names and service numbers stiched inside clothing, also tailor job numbers done very poorly like yours for easy removal after tailoring. Probably some type of identifying number. What is the garment and branch of service etc.

Thanks for the responce. It's stitched to the inside of this wee thing. Initially arrived with the remnants of sew in boards, which I have removed for safe keeping.

Hi Mark,
Could it be 2 company..141 Regiment, if one existed. Owner could of crudely stitched himself. Just a thought.

Lettering

Looks similar to what was stitched inside of my naval jacket. Which I was told "first character is region" the number is the number he was given when he enlisted that year, what is missing is the year code, mine was 39.

Panzer Boards

Those are Army boards so it is not likely to be a Kreigsmarine enlistment date and assignment number. It looks more like tailor number. Are there issue stamps? Usually the DAK coats are French made. It seems to fit tighter than most issue coats and might have been taken in at the waist for a better fit. Can you see if they moved the right side row of buttons over or cut out part of the inside flap and resewed it together?

You can actually see in the photo the buttons have been moved. The top two on the left are farther to the left than the rest and off the angle of the line.

Hi all,
The buttons have been re-applied by myself as none were present when I got it. I'll also need to re-apply the board bridles (the stitch marks are there. These were removed when the officer had the sew-ins applied)
There has been two sets of buttons stitched on at some point - issue and a modified set to enlarge the coat for use by a bigger individual. There has been no alteration work done to the coat itself and is otherwise in original condition Even the lower edge is in it's raw form.
All the markings have washed out , but the soldier(?) has written his name on the interior.
I must thank the seller who approached me with this coat, You've made my year!

I've re attached the correct 19mm buttons to the original stitch points. The tunic looks a little tight on this mannequin as I've tensioned all the slack to the rear for a 'cleaner' line up front.

The hand-written name on the interior. As stated, the markings are washed out , but the size is a good 42inch chest.

I agree the photo isn't the best, but I think I've stretched and skewed the coat about a bit on the mannequin's torso, so the buttons certainle appear mis-aligned (well spotted!)
I've another tunic with sewn labelling, but a loose tag - nothing like this. Thanks for the replies, guys. Glenn, I hope your package arrives soon so we can see your set-up in the collections thread
