Here is another example from a Hungarian WWII tunic. I thought more about this and they could be also be museum curation numbers. Most museums usually sew cloth tags inside with inventory numbers. An older method might have been applying the thread numbers directly to the cloth somewhere it would not be seen on display.

Now that makes good sense - doesn't permanantly mark the item, and the markings on mine don't add up as unit information.

Good to know there are so many of us around the world.
The lettetrs and numbers on your coat were sewn in by the cleaning personell of either military or civilianl cleaning company. Many of my grandpa's drycleaned pants and coats are bearing similar "insignia". The coloured pieces of material where used for quick identification, the owner of the garmet kept the other piece of scrap material sewn in (usually the lower part as it was hanged up besides many others) showing it up by handover.

grandpa's pants

Grandpa's pants and coats where from the the 60's, and 70's but marking them like this remained as it was quick, cheap and easy.

I hadn't forgotten about this thread, & I'm pleased you both have added posts.
I'm more than happy with the coat - I know how incredibly rare tropical one's are ( I was quoted by a noted author that he knows of 9 in private collections world-wide).
Mine has no internal breast pocket, (manufactured that way) and the 'French cuffs' are one piece, not turn backs.
Thankfully the bottom retains the raw edge. The signed lining is a nice touch.
