Hy Djpool
i have cuff titel GD the same as yours, with no turn down cloth to the back, this came from a veteran and was in his photo album, on mine the ends were sewn togetger at one point, and later been ripped apart, so that there is a smal hole in the fabric of the cuff titel.
Now the question are they post war commemorative cuff titels ??or war time????
i mean mine really looks worn and beat, the veteran is long time dead , so there is no way to ask him.
maybe some of you guys have a clue
Cheers

Personally I think they are war time. The wear on mine appears to be honest, something I doubt would have happened with a Vet item. My experience with insignia found in photo items is they are generally something worn by the owner or obtained as a souvenir. Just my opinion. Jim

Jim:
The overall look of yours is heartening...from what I can see, it looks nice on the front....worn and aged as sometimes seen. The back is perplexing, but given the favorable aspects of yours, it puts such unusual backing more in to the realm of possible. I cannot substantiate why beyond "variation". What's the base material on your example? standard wool? Is the backing added on and perhaps the two folds are underneath? or is it a single piece of cloth?
Even in that light, Sergey's is not a strong candidate for originality to me as you note - looks very crisp and modern-made.
I have to caution on what veterans hand over as "their stuff". The stories are well-known...and I have a recent personal experience to back them up....I met with a GD KC winner last week in Germany. He brought out his wartime KC to show me - very proudly so. It was a post war copy, marked 800 front and back, post war ribbon also. I was with two other very advanced collectors - one who owns 27 KC groupings and, all of us could tell this was a post war cross from 10 feet away. My KC veteran has no clue someone swapped it out at some point in the 60 years he 's been around since the end of the war.
But back to the GD cufftitle...one day I'll want to look at your's first hand Jim, if that is ever possible.CSP

Its basically one piece of cloth (almost felt like, but its wool) with the backing cloth bonded to it.Must have manufactured it this way then cut it. Theres no way the cloth w/o backing could have taken the embroidery process. I've seen this before on other private purchase Cts. I attached some pics.
I know your doing research for your book.Any time your ready to start examining my items just let me know and I'll mail you whatever I have. Some things really can't be explained with pictures.

I think I recognize generally the type material you describe on your example. Zinger's looks to be two kinds of materials...ie, a "buckram-like" backing sewn on. However, his may be one piece as well...Zinger??
In any case...I cannot form a definitive position and would put yours (perhaps Zinger's also) in to an "undocumented variation".
Book is progressing...not as fast as I'd like, but..we are at war...even in the Pentagon
I do plan to tap you for help ...at present writing the straps and boards portions...and I keep coming up with more material/details. When I get it to somewhat of a polish product and determine how to integrate actual examples, I'll feel I have arrived at a good point. I'll certainly want some knowledgeable proof readers for content.
Thanks again...CSP
