      Over the years the majority of really big flags that I have looked at were made out of very thin material. I would guess that it is due to the weight and to allow some wind to blow through it.

        I have this photo of my collection, I think the flag is the same type of the showed on this thread.

                the picture you posted is showing one of the "old" model flags in use in 1941-42, which was changed for the silk-screened model presented by Ben on post #2.

                This is very clear that those"old" models were changed because the runes were too close, and the runes couldn't be seen from distance.
                Many examples are available online, showing this problem.

                The new model (with more space between the runes) is perfectly visible from far away.

                  Really?. You got documentation?. Could it maybe be just how the flag is utilized or designed to be utilized?. Maybe a larger flag might have a larger gap due to it being designed to be seen from a distance. Could that be it?
