Yes, the rock Island PPs-43 has faked ID and serial marked on the top with a small burr such as used with a Dremel tool. The gun was registered by RMJ as noted in the description, but in my opinion RMJ remanufactured the gun between '68 and '86 and did not import it.
Pic below is of vintage 1944 PPS-43, correctly registered in US NFRTR (registry) and is categorized as an original, factory gun (C+R).
Compare marking with RIA gun and it is clear that the RIA gun has non-factory markings applied.

No friend and no donation, must have been jn early 90s. I also have fotos of a set of MP44 pouches in ital. camo with same markings...

At least do some research before you try this sort of thing. Check the copyright in seniches book then come back with an earlier date for us. When that fails read the donation card at WTS and explain how your friend is still alive assuming they were twenty when donating them. Show us your pictures.

It gets worse, often the fakes are there because the museum staff sold the real ones years ago(keeping the money themselves) and replaced them with fakes.
A VFW hall near me had a Knight's Cross which was donated to the hall by the vet, they were pretty proud of it but it was a fake.
Somewhere along the line it was swapped out for the real one.

That's sad, but doesn't surprise me at all. I used to think museums where there to protect history, but after I applied for a job at one, and wasn't even contacted, I began to wonder why?
Sad to say, but many exist for the greed, and profit of the corrupt only.

For the right price many would not care, and many would not know the difference anyway. RIA doesn't have a clue and they should........
