So maybe I'm wrong. Very tin coat then, actually missing in some spots.

If so, it's something that can be solved easily. I woudn't mind having that one. Mine has a non matching bolt...

Might have Tru-Oil on the stock....Is the handguard marked 'dot' as well as the butt stock?....Waffen Brunn (dot) made K98k's are very common, as I believe almost one million were made late in the war.....I have three myself.....Bodes

          Tim,

Shame about the crack in the stock, but from what I can see it looks like a good one. I agree that the stock has been varnished, or shellac?

Check to make sure the stock is matching. Numbers for the stock and hand guard will be inside in the barrel channel.
As long as the stock matches, I think you got a good find! Needs a little TLC though, but it should clean up nice.

One question; where do you get all these good finds???

          Matt

That stock is certainly varnished and not done by the German military. In that condition (metal finish, varnish and crack) not exactly a "good find".

It's always better to find a full matching unmodified Kar 98 than those sporterised-buffle-trimmed unmatching Frankensteins you can see around. A bit of elbow work and some solvent to remove the shellac can transform that pumpking into a Rolls. The crack is something else, a good carpenter work would do. Perhaps it is not a top 10 but just a good humble find I wouldn't mind finding myself.

It's great any time you can find a matching rifle.

If you intend to remove the varnish use lacquer thinner. It works very slowly and will remove only the varnish without destroying the patina in the wood. The regular paint strippers are very harsh and will remove everything down to the bare wood.

I agree, no paint remover, they are too strong solvents. If it is shellac, alcohol might do. Slowly and with care.

Personally I don't think I'd mess with it...It's not a rare code, and removing the overcoat may leave the wood looking lifeless and cleaned...Than one might be inclined to putting boiled linseed oil on it, and viola....There goes any stock markings if ones not careful......Bodes

Wouldn't mess with the crack either....Likely caused by the wood drying out...Any poor attempt at repair may only make it more pronounced.....Bodes

                        Thanx for all input.
I just want to get the surface rust off of the metal and leave well enough alone.
It will be going up on the block soon anyhow.
All my pistols do is sit in a safe anyhow.
I don't need another rifle collecting dust in the dark.
I'll let it move on to another home after I get it cleaned up.

Sorry. I thought they could be viewed even if not registered. It is a quick process to registered and may be worth it to view some nice 98ks.
