K98 Sniper Review

Do it see it correct, that the bolt is mismatching? Noticed that it has a shortened safety, so might have some sniper history itself aswell. And it looks to be reblued, but except for that a good thing to start with!

The safety is not Reblued this is typical of Late War Mauser . Theres a Mix of Blued and Phosphate Parts on these Rifles . It high probability that mm bolt is from another HT .

I had some time to take close ups of the bolt. It matches unto itself, but not the rifle

The Safety appears to be correct milled down or sniper safety , it is very likely the bolt came from another HT . Best Regards

Appears the bolt is from an "L" block 1944 byf where an inverted "7" was used.... a known variation

Great find indeed! Shame it's been sporterized, but lots of hunters did this to K98s post war.

As for the stock, and parts, be patient. Don't rush. It will come.

My experience is that parts for most German WWII firearms have become very difficult to find (not even talking about price when you do!) in non-post war rebuilt condition. In other words, most of what is around has been re-conditioned and or altered in some way...mostly re-finish and added markings. Things like K98k bolts are crazy now with some bringing close to the price of Russian capture 98ks or even what Bolt MM were selling for 7-8 years ago...sometimes.

You are lucky in the sense that there were more stocks made for byf 44 than any other make/year.....and for that matter one made in 1943 by byf would be pretty much correct. I hate to say it, but to really find the correct stock that would do that rifle justice you are probably going to have to buy a nice condition but hopefully bolt MM byf 44 near that letter block and make sure that the stock matches the receiver and use it as a donor for that rifle along with the bands.

It is sad to think but frankly most of these kind of firearms (98ks, Lugers and so on) will part out for more money that they easily sell for intact unless they are very special.
