Yes, likely to have been used by a hunter; the vet who brought it home or someone after him.

Nice example and worth finding a nice late stock and hardware.

Have you asked the son to have a good look around for the old stock? I have a high turret with a replaced stock. Mine was cut down so the soldier would be able to smuggle it back due to restrictions.

This HT would have had a checkered buttplate originally . You did well trusting Your gut feeling . Best Regards .

If Your wanting to restore it , I may have the needed Parts .

It's kind of odd, but I like it the way it is. No matter what you do, it's still going to be a restored piece.

It has a certain character as is.

the vast majority of the german sniper rifles out there have had some sort of restoration. One part of collecting sniper rifles is buying a rifle here, a scope there and putting the two together. Matching examples are nearly nonexistent. I do know where one high turret mount rifle is with matching numbers and scope!

Looks like it's built on a '44 dated mauser (byf) action......The bolt is late war as well as you can see the bolt body, bolt sleeve, and cocking piece all have a phosphate finish....Bodes

quite possibly an Ar44 marked receiver in the n block that in itself is a hard rifle to find. then add a HT to the mix and its very scarce. Buying a doner rifle might be worth the investment. Unless S.C. has all the parts.

Any idea where to buy these scarce parts, would be most appreciated

I would put up a WTB ad on gunboards and k98kforum.com

There is actually a larger number of 100% Matching Snipers than many are aware of .
I agree You have a higher likely hood of finding or seeing MM Optic than Matching Optic Sniper . I know a number of collectors with 100% matching Sniper Rifles , I have a few as well . There really not as nonexistent as You suspect . Then again if that is what one collects and associates with such collectors one would see and know of more than one who does not . Best Regards

Do it see it correct, that the bolt is mismatching? Noticed that it has a shortened safety, so might have some sniper history itself aswell. And it looks to be reblued, but except for that a good thing to start with!
