You did not get burned, clestuff-- Those training rifles, in any condition, are pretty thin on the ground.

Hmmm, the type 99 has probably been redone for 30-06 caliber (postwar). That used to be kind of popular to do. If the barrel was correctly replaced with a new one, it would be ok. But sometimes they were just rechambered. I might suggest a gunsmith examine it before you shoot it, to see what was done to it in the recent past.
