    Couple of Japanese Rifles

I just picked two Japanese rifles off an old guy. I really know little about them. I know one is missing parts but they both seem to be in pretty good shape. Any and all info appreciated.

    Thanks, Cliff

The one with the full mum is a Type 99. The other is a Type 38. Looks like it might be a school mark on the receiver, but can't tell without clearer pictures. If you show the serial number area with a clear photo, we can identify the arsenal and approximate date of manufacture.

                  Thanks,
                  Pat

There are no serial numbers I can see.

I don't think it's a school rifle....usually they put a symbol known as "bun" (as told to me by a fluent Japanese speaker) on the receiver. I've got a really really early school rifle that I'm looking for a full length barrel and a stock for (was bubba'ed) and could maybe post pictures later if people really wanted when the light is better. but my S/N is 38923 and it appears to be a zero series from the Tokyo arsenal

also, If somebody has a line on a decent barrel for the price lemme know

here's the "bun" symbol. Interestingly enough, bun can mean "the proper way" so I wouldn't be surprised if thats to do with the idea of training

                        T 38 looks a little odd-is it a trainer?

The crest on the type 38 is for the Nippon special steel training rifle. Likely doesn't have a serial number, and probably has a smooth bore with no rifiling. It wasn't made to fire live ammunition.

Well, I guess I got burnt. I didn't even get a real rifle.

Maybe I am using the nomenclature incorrectly. So a school rifle is rifle, smooth bore, not to be fired with live ammo, used for teaching in school aka training. So are you saying that a training rifle used for a school is a different term ? One of those, all school rifles are training rifles, but not all training rifles were used at school sort of thought ?

                              Thanks
