such an expensive piece of history like that needs to be better displayed and protected, not left for the General public to handle and mess about with

The selector must have been set in full-auto position if the charger stayed to the rear (without a mag inserted), after cocking, will need to have the trigger pulled to release bolt.
However if the safety is on (left side) and it's fixed in against the wall, you're stuck until someone takes it down.
Full auto - open bolt operation.
Semi-auto - closed bolt operation.
