The stock has been worked on and if it were still original to the barrel/receiver, it would be proofed with S. A. / E. *** (Springfield Armory / Earl ***arland). Other stamps used on the stocks were the circled 'P' proof mark (with serifs) on the pistol grip and the Ordnance Wheel with Crossed Cannons.......Is the barrel dated or is it just marked with the letter 'P'?.....If it's not dated, it has been replaced some time in it's life.....This is not unusual, as many were refurbished at some time.....Your appears to have been reparkerized....As it has an importation stamp on it, it likely was used by any of the countries the US sent weapons to following WW2....Bodes

Your Garand was made by Springfield Armory.....The stock on the original would've been proofed with S.A/E.*** (Springfield Armory/Earl ***arland).....I don't know why I can't change the asterisks in the above post....Bodes

I don't know if the barrel is dated. I would have to knock the pins out to get the forestock off and I really don't want to do that. Which stamp is the importation stamp? What is it worth?

Pull on the slide handle just far enough to see into the gap between the handguard and buttstock....It will have a date like 8-44 (August 1944)....The company that imported your rifle into this country is found on the end of the barrel....Bodes
As suggested, pull the op-rod back until it locks, and you will find the barrel date on the right hand side of the barrel. All the barrels were dated.
Nothing has to be knocked out to remove the front handguard. Unscrew the gas cylinder lock screw, unscrew the gas cylinder lock, the gas cylinder will slide off forward, and the handguard can be pulled off.
