I agree with you, but we have to keep in mind that those type of collections will (and have) also at times and in time in many cases show up being offered by the large auctions.
I guess my main two points were that not all collections contained all great items by todays standards....and others have commented on this and also that the health of collecting in general needs to be fed by good items coming back into the market from time to time and in some numbers.
I believe that we gained a thousand serious military rifle collectors added to the hobby ONLY because of the easy to obtain and cheap import rifles (that so many like deriding these days) that came available in the mid 80s until now (but fading fast as of the last few years), this infusion allowed a whole new generation to get into the hobby and then move into the more exclusive firearms.
I think that the higher end items also need this kind of infusion from time to time to keep the interest healthy.
I agree completely with all that you have said - especially about the impact of RC's on todays market.
