    1938 Luger Purchase Decision

    Hi all,

I'm looking to buy this Luger for $2500. It is all matching including the magazine. Do you think this is a good deal?

    Best,
    Ray

          Good

Don't know much about current prices but I think it is within reason.
The gun looks great I see no problems.
That finish is a killer !!

I haven't been keeping up with prices lately but that sure sounds excessive to me I've got a similar one you can have for $1,400

$2500 is pretty steep. You can find complete rigs (holster, gun and mags) on gunbroker for about the same. IMO a matching gun should be around $1000-$1500 depending on condition of the finish. A matching mag adds about $300+/-
Hard to tell from the pictures if the finish is original to the gun...it appears glossy. The GESICHERT stamp should be white, and the signs of plumb colors poking through the rear of the gun are OK.

Hard to tell by a picture, but that looks like areblued luger. Not a big fan of white in the letters. You can probably tell mroe by holding it, but as others have said, I believe you can find one for less.Ron

The white was added by the seller to bring out the numbers (he said he can remove it)

That is far too expensive. Head over to lugerforum.com.

They have plenty of Lugers like this one for about $1,000 less.

Alot of sellers and collectors will add white to the numbers and waffenamts with a wax pencil to draw out worn stampings or show on a poor quality camera. Easily removable. As I said earlier, the only real white should be behind the safety toggle. IF you are determined this is the Luger for you, have the seller disassemble the pistol completely. You need to verify that everything matches down to the firing pin and grips. I believe it is common for 38-39 grips to not be numbered.

The price of that is around the average for a real nice one with 1 matching mag. A matching mag adds more like $800 to $1000 to the price of a all matching except mag pistol. It looks too new in the pics and is probably a reblue. It can be really hard to tell by pictures sometimes.

I agree with the other posters that the price is way on the high side and that the finish is a little too perfect and possibly a reblued example. Forum members can offer better opinions with higher resolution pictures so if you have them then please post them. In addition you have to consider if "capture" papers and year matching holster are included. I also agree that a complete disassembly and checking of the serial numbers on all parts is in order as well as a reduction in price.

I can see enough wear on the frame that I don't think it has been reblued. The price may be a bit high, but if it fills the need for what you want in a luger, then buy it. I don't have a problem with paying a premium for something that I will treasure.
