    uk deactivation certificates

    Hi all
Are UK deactivation certificates traceable to a specific gun once they get into puplic domain? e.g .. A weapon deactivated in 2006 and had more than 4 owners.

    Thanks Rob

Rob, As I understand it the certificate is for the gun, not the owner and so is transferable from owner to owner.

What happens if the Deact Certificate gets lost? I assume that the government maintains records of these and will provide a replacement upon request?

Are there legal ramifications to possession of a Deact w/out Certificate? I am assuming that the government has the gun registered as a "deact" with a copy of the Certificate on file?

Just wondering: we run into all sorts of problems here in the U.S. involving legally registered machineguns where the registration paperwork gets lost over time, so I am curious as to how a similar issue is handled under British law.

The weapon system also has a marking stamped on it by the proofing house, so it is identified Comrade.

I bought two Lugers some years ago without de-ac certificates. I contacted the proofing house for some duplicates and was told that no records were kept so a duplicate was not possible. Hard to believe but that I what they said.
I had to send the pistols in for checking and I was issued new certificates.
This was about ten years ago, things might have changed now.....

As long as the deactivation stamps are on there, and are clear, then I think it is perfectly ok to own the gun without the paper certificate.

                Certificates.

Hi, I'm pretty certain that I was able to get a duplicate certificte from the proof house after my gun was stolen from me then eventually returned to me. I think there are two proof houses in the UK and one would think they both must have records of the guns that have been deactivated by them. Regards David.

The Proof Houses do keep records which relate to Weapon type, Serial numbers/Certificate numbers, however they will not issue a replacement certificate without examining the weapon. Once checked the gun is re stamped with fresh Deact stamps and issued with a certificate dated with the actual date of inspection not the original date.

And, I would imagine, an invoice for the work?

Les I have a colleague with a K98 without certificate but deactivated and stamped up. Can He sell it as is? Or is it now needing a certificate to own or sell?

                          Hi Jon,

You can buy, own and sell a Deact without a Certificate as long as all the modified parts (Bolt, Barrel and receiver) have the correct Deact stamps. Expect to get £70 - £100 less for a gun with a missing Cert.

                          Les
