Thanks all for the inputs. Sounds like this got stuck through the holster at a later date.

Equipment was modified with insignia, Joe. I know of no collector hear-say for or against the possibility of soldiers sticking service insignia on to holsters, and was interested in any photographic evidence showing such use.

Doesn't look like we have a thread or other respository of evidence supporing use of the insignia at this time, so I guess the answer is no.

Good discussion; thanks again for inputs.

US veterans are known to attach IIIrd Reich insignia to a number of things ... the Waffen-SS certainly wouldn't have added a skull to a holster.

It was a common practice among GIs for captured gear.
I had seen it before. However, never saw one - on forums, books or personally - that was attributed to a German soldier. It goes to the same league as nickled plated guns advertised as "German Officer" model.

This topic comes up every now and then on various forums.
Consensus is that it was done by vets-or us kids in the 50s who performed unspeakeable mutilations on this stuff.

I have seen US gear in use where a GI stuck an EGA or jump wings, etc to holsters and other pieces.
Germans were unlikelyto be that imaginative or free willed.

I have owned and seen holsters with Iron Crosses, cap eagles, Italian strs-you name it.

I had never seen period pictures of such insignia in use by the Germans in WWII. It looks like no one else has either. Thanks for all the observations, fellas.
