Need to see marks on left side of reciever.

This could be a trainer-many were brought home.

It's a trainer. The only anchor marked issued rifles were late war pieces and the simple anchor (with out cherry blossom) was very small and not as florid as this example. The stamped stock markings generally state that use of live ammo is prohibited. The unusual thing is that your example has a two piece stock which are only found , as far as I know , on issue rifles. Trainers usually have single piece stocks.

This is not true. Naval Special production started in 1943.

I would be curious to know what the kanji reads on the side of the butt stock. This rifle appears to be a Naval Special, as they looked like a training rifle, but were made to fire live rounds and to be used by the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Some of them had a split two piece stock such as shown.

Can we get a full picture of the rifle and some details of the front?

Thanks for the correction mudd, I wasn't aware they were being crafted as early as '43. Mine has just the anchor with a single kanji and it's roughly built. Nowhere near as nicely made as Dan's example.

                Nice rifle.

I had one similiar. I believe the writing said something about "use blanks only."

                    Len,
No prob! I have a REALLY crude Naval Special carbine that I picked up a couple months ago that I'll have to post some pictures of sometime.

Its definitely a trainer and not a Naval Special 99. This is a type 38 trainer, NS type 99s will look like crude type 99's.

I'm no expert on these trainers, but how can you classify it as a T38 trainer when it only has one gas port and a T99 style front band?

I do see the T38 features as well, but I think this would be classified as a pseudo-Type 99/38 naval trainer.
