Another thread on a K98 got me to looking at one of mine because it is also the same year and maker as the posted one. I noticed a small hole in the stock and thought to myself that it looked like shell damage. I had never thought of it before and I have owned the rifle for a long time so I am sure I got the idea recently from something someone else posted at some time.
The rifle is a bolt-mm, but otherwise matching. It was the rifle that actually got me started in collecting. I walked into a gun store when I was in my youth and asked for a rifle that the Germans used in WWII. It never even occurred to me at the time that they might not have one; not knowing any better I just thought a gun store would have any gun you wanted! Anyway, the guy told me it was my lucky day because a vet had just brought in one the day before that he had brought back from the war. He walked over to the back counter and picked up a blanket that was on the floor under the counter and unwrapped the rifle.
I realize it is just speculation, but what does everybody else think, is this possibly shell damage?

thus stabbing the firing pin into the stock ?
