    K98 Shell damage?

Another thread on a K98 got me to looking at one of mine because it is also the same year and maker as the posted one. I noticed a small hole in the stock and thought to myself that it looked like shell damage. I had never thought of it before and I have owned the rifle for a long time so I am sure I got the idea recently from something someone else posted at some time.

The rifle is a bolt-mm, but otherwise matching. It was the rifle that actually got me started in collecting. I walked into a gun store when I was in my youth and asked for a rifle that the Germans used in WWII. It never even occurred to me at the time that they might not have one; not knowing any better I just thought a gun store would have any gun you wanted! Anyway, the guy told me it was my lucky day because a vet had just brought in one the day before that he had brought back from the war. He walked over to the back counter and picked up a blanket that was on the floor under the counter and unwrapped the rifle.

I realize it is just speculation, but what does everybody else think, is this possibly shell damage?

Could be, or could the damage have been done by a clumsy soldier when dismantling the bolt when cleaning and missing the hole thus stabbing the firing pin into the stock ?

That sounds more logical. The hole is too round to be shell damaged. Very nice rifle, by the way

Indeed, that does make perfect sense. It also sounds like something I would do!

I don't think so, the hole is too deep for being made by the firing pin coming into the stock...I think it could very well be a tiny shrapnel damage.
                    Very nice rifle, I concur

I agree Johnny that looks like shrapnel damage but one thing I noticed on Jap guns is they can have damage from other guns during un-protected transport.

I have a spot just like that on a TY99 stock but its from the little round peepsite from another gun...

Notice how its right in line with the rear site from another gun placed next to it?

                          ..

Notice on the circled areas there is still shrapnel in the stock. The hole goes all the way into the receiver. No rear sight did that damage.
