    K98 Steyr Matching # Help???

    Hello,
I was told this was a Steyr but it doesn't have the WA### markings. I could use some help finding out what it is. All are matching numbers. Thanks.

              Hey Chap 15,

this rifle is not from 'Steyr'. The marking '147, 1939 below' stands for J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Gewehrfabrik Suhl. They use this makers mark since the year 1939. Before they have the marking 'S/147'. The eagle with the number 359 is the correct WAA-Stamp for this manufactorer. You can see a rifle with the same markings in Richard Law's book about the K 98 rifle on page 104 left.

wish I could have one like this

              greetings from germany

How would this rifle compare to a Steyr or a bmz marked K98. Is is worth more or less or depends on the beholder? Germany is a nice place...good food ..three years in Schweinfurt, I miss it

Steyr markings are from till 1940 "660" WaA 623 and from 1940-45 "bnz"
                  Sauer&Sohn markings:
                  1934: S/147 K
                  1935: S/147G WaA 116/114
                  1936-38: S/147 WaA 359
                  1938 -40: 147 WaA359
                  1941-43: ce (kursiv) WaA359
                  1943-44: ce WaA37/280

                  Hope that helps

Steyr made are "generally" more desirable...

                    and consequently more expensive!
Contrary to backbone Steyr started producing the 98k in 1938, and early Steyr rifles (29/40; 98k) are darn hard to find in original finish & matching.
Sauer made rifles are desirable but they are often found with lesser quality metal finish- further they are far more common to find matching & undinked up...

My database shows 6 1939 Steyrs (98k; 29/40) & I have 9 1939 Sauers recorded/imaged- dusting off backbone the differences are more startling, 200,000 vs 17,000 (not sure if he is counting the 29/40?)

Everyone has their favorite maker, as you now have a nice early 98k if I were you... I would chose Sauer as my favorite!
